The bill follows on Hertzberg’s work to restore fairness to California’s criminal justice system and roll back overly harsh penalties

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, unveiled legislation today to prevent the automatic suspension of driver’s licenses for people who are unable to pay fines or fees for minor traffic tickets and require courts to determine violators’ ability to pay before setting fine amounts.

SB 185, introduced this morning, states that your economic status shouldn’t determine your access to justice and ability to make amends. In addition, any previously suspended licenses must be reinstated for violators who make a good faith effort to begin payment plans.

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, introduced legislation today to extend a tax checkoff for food banks through 2026, ensuring that Californians can choose to donate some of their state tax refund to help feed the hungry by marking a box on their returns.

The Emergency Food for Families Fund has appeared on tax returns since 1998 as a donation option, but it is scheduled to disappear beginning in 2019, without legislation action.

Hertzberg will also remain on the committees he has served since being elected to the Senate in 2014

SACRAMENTO – A measure authored by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) and Senator Robert Hertzberg (D – Van Nuys) to transform the way elections are conducted was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown today.  SB 450 authorizes counties to replace neighborhood polling places with conveniently located vote centers and allow voting in the 10 days preceding and election; it also requires every voter to be mailed a vote-by-mail ballot.
