Hertzberg Announces Hiring of Longtime Capitol Attorney Drew Liebert
Liebert was longtime chief counsel of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, now becomes chief of staff to the Senate Majority Leader
SACRAMENTO – Senate Majority Leader Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) announced today that he has appointed Drew Liebert, whose public service career of over 25 years in the California Legislature includes 18 years as chief counsel of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, as his new chief of staff.
“I am excited that I was able to entice Drew out of his recent retirement to lead my extraordinary legislative team,” said Hertzberg. “I have known Drew for over two decades. Having served in both the Senate and the Assembly, he has been one of the Legislature’s key legal analysts and staff leaders. I know Drew will be a great asset to the Senate, who will ably help me shepherd my legislative initiatives.”
In addition to his long tenure as chief counsel of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, Liebert served as legislative director for former Senator Gary K. Hart (D-Santa Barbara). He also spent several years in private law practice following a federal court clerkship in Anchorage, Alaska.
In accepting the appointment, Liebert commented: “I have long admired Senator Hertzberg’s incredible intellect and legendary capacity to engage on an extraordinarily broad array of our most pressing public policy issues. I am honored to join his excellent staff to lead his ambitious legislative agenda.”
Liebert is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UC Berkeley, a recipient of a Masters in Public Policy from the Claremont Graduate School, a CORO Foundation Fellow in Public Affairs, and a graduate of UC Berkeley School of Law, where he won the law school’s prestigious moot court competition. He has also been honored as a California Lawyer of the Year. In addition, Liebert has also been a frequent lecturer across the state on the Legislature's inner workings, and has taught law students about politics and government at the Santa Clara School of Law as well as the Panetta Institute for Public Policy and McGeorge School of Law.
Liebert is a Sacramento native, where he resides with his attorney wife Barbara, 11-year-old son Kaden, and 11-month-old Golden retriever puppy Tahoe.
