Legislation punishing ransomware, expediting traffic amnesty claims, improving water supply and modernizing Cal-Access awaits action

SACRAMENTO – Three bills by Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, have been signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in recent weeks and 10 more have been sent to the governor’s desk. Here is an update of Hertzberg’s legislation:

SB 881 now focuses on ensuring courts respond promptly to traffic amnesty claims and honor all claims filed by March 31, 2017

SACRAMENTO – The Senate today passed legislation by Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, that requires courts to respond to traffic amnesty claims within 90 days of the claims being filed.

SB 614 clarifies the law to ensure prisoners serving a year or more in jail receive the same access to legal representation as those in prison

SACRAMENTO – The Senate today passed legislation by Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, to correct an oversight of law created by the state’s 2011 public safety realignment that denies county jail inmates the same rights to legal representation they would receive if they were in state prison.

SB 614, which cleared the Assembly last week, was approved on a 39-0 vote and goes next to the governor for his consideration.

SB 954 requires employees to give consent before employers can deduct a portion of wages for use by contractor associations

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Jerry Brown today signed legislation by Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, that requires employees to give their consent before employers can deduct wages from their paychecks for industry advancement programs.

SB 954 clarifies the list of deductions an employer can count to reduce hourly wages, without prior consent from employees. The bill excludes wage credits for employer payments for industry advancement unless it is part of a bargained agreement.

SB 1349 overhauls Cal-Access to make campaign and lobbying disclosures quick and easy to find online

SACRAMENTO – A measure authored by Senator Ben Allen (D – Santa Monica) and Senator Robert Hertzberg (D – Van Nuys) to transform the way elections are conducted passed the legislature today.  The bill, SB 450, was approved on a bipartisan, final vote of 26 - 11in the state Senate.

With three days to go in this year’s legislative session, several bills have been sent to the Governor and a few await a final vote

SACRAMENTO – The Assembly today passed legislation by Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, to help protect computer users by clarifying that infecting computers with ransomware is a form of extortion and punishable as such.
