EDUCATION: Proposed bill would help pay loans of public service lawyers

State Sen. Bob Hertzberg, the Valley’s newest representative in Sacramento, has a plan to solve dual problems in the legal profession.

On the one hand, legal aid organizations find it difficult to find staff attorneys. On the other, the average debt of a 2012 law school graduate was about $85,000 from a public school and $122,000 from a private school, according to the American Bar Association.

Under a cloudy March sky, thousands of bicyclists rolled down Lankershim Boulevard early Sunday in the first CicLAvia car-free event to be held in the San Fernando Valley.

The increasingly popular open-street festival got started about 9 a.m. at the Metro Red Line North Hollywood station, with riders streaming down the 5.5-mile route along Lankershim and Ventura boulevards in Studio City. The event runs until 4 p.m.

Julie Grisham was thrilled to see the throngs of cyclists, pedestrians, scooters and skateboarders sailing down Lankershim and Ventura boulevards in trendy North Hollywood and Studio City for the first CicLAvia-The Valley on Sunday.

As the Studio City resident leisurely rode her bicycle down Lankershim Boulevard during the popular open-streets event, she marveled at the many attractions she had managed to miss while driving in her car.
