SB 313 requires businesses providing the renewals to improve notification, allow consumers to easily cancel the arrangement

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, has introduced legislation that allows consumers to sign up for a free trial without agreeing to an automatic renewal for the service that comes with a charge.

In addition, SB 313 requires businesses to make it just as easy for consumers to cancel the arrangements as it was to sign up for them. The bill directs businesses to notify consumers three days before they are charged for an automatic renewal, and it requires businesses to obtain a consumer’s separate authorization for the renewal.

A constitutional amendment will allow water agencies to provide discounted rates to the poor, higher rates for big users

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, introduced a constitutional amendment today that will help California better manage water by allowing agencies to adjust their rates to encourage conservation and provide discounts to people struggling to pay their water bills.

The bill follows on Hertzberg’s work to restore fairness to California’s criminal justice system and roll back overly harsh penalties

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, unveiled legislation today to prevent the automatic suspension of driver’s licenses for people who are unable to pay fines or fees for minor traffic tickets and require courts to determine violators’ ability to pay before setting fine amounts.

SB 185, introduced this morning, states that your economic status shouldn’t determine your access to justice and ability to make amends. In addition, any previously suspended licenses must be reinstated for violators who make a good faith effort to begin payment plans.
