More than 12 years after representing the San Fernando Valley as Speaker of the California Assembly, Bob Hertzberg has returned to the state Legislature as the senator representing the recently redrawn 18th Senate District.

SACRAMENTO (SDJW)–State Sen. Robert Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys) delivered the daily invocation in the Senate chambers on Thursday, March 5, marking the holiday of Purim.  Hertzberg summarized the story of Purim from the Book of Esther and had hamantaschen distributed to each of his 39 Senate colleagues.  He also praised Sen. Marty Block (D-San Diego), chair of the Legislature’s Jewish Caucus for successfully sponsoring a resolution last week, condemning the defilement of an Israeli flag with a swastika.

A bill introduced in the California Senate would expand the ability of commercial and industrial electricity customers to buy renewable energy directly from independent suppliers instead of through major utilities

The biggest electricity users in California could buy power from a seller other than one of the three big utilities under legislation offered yesterday that was framed as a way to expand renewable energy.

Lawmakers hold hearing on stormwater retention projects

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —California is letting billions of gallons of perfectly good water wash down its storm drains and out to sea.

That was the take-away lesson from a hearing at the state Capitol on Wednesday.

The Senate Governance and Finance Committee and the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee held a joint hearing on the potential for stormwater savings projects.

The drought took center stage in a committee room at the Capitol Wednesday.

The goal of the informational joint meeting -- with the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and the Senate Governance and Finance Committee -- was to explore innovative and cost-effective ways to fund projects to recapture and re-use rain water and dry weather runoff, rather than letting it flow into the ocean.

Governance and Finance Committee Chair Bob Hertzberg said there is about $200 million earmarked for projects.
