Hertzberg Denounces U.S. Senate’s Passage of Disastrous Tax Reform Measure

Bill would have significant impact on California taxpayers

December 2, 2017

SACRAMENTO – Last night, the United States Senate passed a tax reform measure after midnight on a vote of 51-49. The bill, if enacted into law, would consolidate the existing seven tax brackets, cut taxes on the wealthy, and eliminate a number of deductions that typically benefit low and middle income earners. In response to the bill’s passage in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, released the following statement:

“The tax reform plan approved by the Senate late last night in Washington D.C. will have devastating results for Americans. It rewards the wealthy, punishes low-income earners, and does nothing to elevate our middle class” said Sen. Hertzberg.

“What’s more, it is especially disastrous for California. Working class Californians will pay more taxes under the plan, and it will only exacerbate the volatility of our state budget. I have been working on solutions to improve California’s tax system for a decade; this plan represents a gigantic leap in the wrong direction.”
